The tennis team brought home another district championship on Tuesday. For the past few years, they’ve not failed to bring home this title.

“I started playing for the tennis team my freshman year, so we’ve been district champions every year since then,” senior Shannon Lee said. “We’re the strongest team out of us, Liberty Eylau, Atlanta, and Pittsburgh, so we knew we were going to win.”

With the District win, Pleasant Grove gets a BYE for the next round and they get to go straight to the Area round of the playoffs.

“If we get a BYE week for the next round, then we will advance to Area where we will hope to win,” junior Caroline Joyce said.

The playoff season for the tennis team is just beginning, but they have high hopes for the rest of the season.

“We are trying to go as far as we can. We’re really shooting for Regionals, and I think we’re good enough to get there,” junior Bradley Owens said.

Last year, the tennis team got to Regionals, and they want to go that far again this year.

“I know we’re really good and we really want to go to Regionals,” senior Shannon Lee said. “We won Area last year, and when we went to Regionals last year we lost, so we want to get there again.”

This year will prove as a little bit of a challenge for the team in both the fall team tournament and the spring singles and doubles tournament. With a younger team than last year, they are having to play with more first year varsity players.

“We lost a lot of seniors this year so our team is a lot weaker this year than it was last year,” Shannon said. “Once we get to spring, it will be individual and I don’t know how good each person is. I’m hoping to go to state in the spring, me and the other guys that are in the top three that are really good.”

The playoffs are just starting, but there is a lot of tennis left this season. They have already made the playoffs for the fall, and they’re getting prepared for the spring competition season. “We’re going to practice and try to get better everyday so we can get a Regional title,” Bradley said.
