Go to theater’s brand new show. You won’t be disappointed, that I know.

For over a month and a half, theater students have been preparing for their fall production, Seussical the Musical. Students in every grade and campus are participating in the show, which is based on the stories of Dr. Seuss, including “Horton Hears a Who.”

“I read a lot of Dr. Seuss books when I was younger and I loved The Grinch and Horton Hears a Who.” said junior Donald Whaley, who has the role of Horton. “Watching both of those when I was young has really helped out and influenced me a lot and got me really excited doing the show.”

The show presents many recognizable characters such as Horton and the Cat in the Hat. Having big roles also has their own difficulties.

“I narrate the whole thing, I’m in almost every single scene,” said senior Addison Smith, who has the role of the Cat in the Hat. “I think it’s (the lines) are easier to memorize, because it’s rhymed. But there a lot of big things that are hard to memorize.”

To prepare for the roles, actors practice from 6 to 10 p.m. three times a week.

“It’s a lot of cardio, it’s very intense,” said sophomore Trinity Tutolo who plays Bird Girl. “We exercise to build up endurance and stamina, so we can have enough energy to dance and sing at the same time.”

Along with the actors’ work, tech crew has been working with the lights, props, and visual aspects of the show. The students make sure the lighting is just right for the show and also paint and make props such as cutting out thousands of clovers.

“Tech is a fun alternative for those who don’t want to act on stage.” sophomore Matthew Armstrong said.

The production also includes the help of those who had experience with theater and acting for years.

“When I was a freshman here, I had the opportunity to either in the show or do an alternate assignment. And I chose to do the show, which was Seussical.” director and theater teacher Mr. Smith said “It’s been fun for me to see a totally new company take on the story I knew well that got me into theater when I was back in high school.”

Seussical will be presented Nov. 9-Nov.11 in the PAC.
