Emma Henard advances to state

Sophomore Emma Henard placed 10th at the regional meet Tuesday and will compete at the state meet in Austin later this month.

The boys’ cross country team also competed at the regional cross country meet at the Jesse Owens memorial stadium in Dallas.

“Emma originally crossed the line at 22nd, but after they took out the teams, she finished at 10th,” cross country coach Gina Clark said. “I was ecstatic. I knew she was close to making the top ten after teams were taken out, and when the results came through, we were both crying with excitement.”

However, sophomore Dai’mond Harvey placed 18th before teams were taken out and 11th place after.  This made him first alternate and missed the state meet by one placement.

“I was sure [Dai’mond ] would make it,” Coach Clark said, “and was in disbelief when he didn’t.”

Despite only having two weeks before the state meet on Nov. 24th, Emma will continue to prepare and train in hopes of shaving a few seconds off her 12:48 time.

“The first thing I’m going to do to prepare is to get new shoes,” Emma said. “My old ones are really old and kind of gross, so I think having new shoes will shave at least five seconds off my time.”
